About osteopathy at City Clinic
Osteopathy is a regulated, hands-on healthcare profession. Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints and relieve muscle tension, alongside advice on posture, lifestyle and exercise.
The title 'osteopath' is protected by law, and every osteopath practising in the UK must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council. Our osteopath sees patients with sporting injuries, workplace-related injuries, general aches and pains, sprains and strains, and spinal problems, and also offers osteopathic sports massage.
Before any treatment begins, your osteopath will examine you and explain what they find. Osteopaths check for signs of conditions that osteopathy cannot treat. If it is not the right treatment for you, they will advise you to see your GP or another health professional.
A profession regulated by law
The title 'osteopath' is protected by law. Nobody may call themselves an osteopath unless they are registered with the General Osteopathic Council, which sets and promotes standards of competency, conduct and safety. The GOsC can, and does, prosecute people who practise as osteopaths without being on its register.
Osteopathy is hands-on. Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints and to relieve muscle tension. Advice on posture, lifestyle and exercise is part of the care. The aim of that advice is to aid recovery and to help stop symptoms coming back.
Your first appointment
Your osteopath starts by listening. They ask about your problem, your general health, any other medical care you are receiving and any medication you take. Then they examine you thoroughly. You may be asked to remove or adjust some clothing, with privacy to undress and a gown or towel provided, and you are welcome to bring a friend or relative to be present throughout. Simple movements and stretches let the osteopath see your posture and mobility, and they examine your joints, muscles and other tissues by hand.
You then get a clear explanation of what they find and a treatment plan that suits you. Your osteopath explains what they are doing and always asks your permission before treating you. They also check for signs of serious conditions that osteopathy cannot treat, and may advise you to see your GP, go to hospital or see another health professional instead. It is not unusual to feel a little sore in the first 24 to 48 hours after treatment.

What happens at my first osteopathy appointment?
It starts with questions about your problem, your general health and any medication you take, followed by a thorough examination. Your osteopath then explains what they find and discusses a treatment plan that suits you. Treatment only begins with your permission. If they see signs of something osteopathy cannot treat, they will advise you to see your GP or another health professional.
